How to Get a NIE Number in Spain: A Step-by-Step Guide for Students

NIE Number

If you’re planning to study, work, or live in Spain, one of the first things you’ll need is a NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero), which is your Foreigner’s Identification Number. It’s essential for any legal, financial, or professional dealings in Spain. While navigating the Spanish bureaucracy can be challenging, we’ve broken down the process step by step to make it easier for you.

What is a NIE Number and Who Needs It?

A NIE number is mandatory for anyone in Spain—whether you’re a resident or a non-resident—if you plan to engage in activities like opening a bank account, working, buying property, or studying. If you’re an EU citizen, you’ll need to apply for a NIE within three months of arriving in Spain. Non-EU citizens will typically receive their NIE along with their Spanish residency card.

If you’re from the UK, remember that after Brexit, you’ll apply for a different type of card called the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero).

Step 1: Make an Appointment for Your NIE

The first step is to schedule an appointment online. You can do this on the official Spanish government website. It’s best to book your appointment as soon as possible after arriving in Spain, as availability can be limited, and the waiting time may be at least a month.

• Go to the appointment booking website.

• Select your province.

• Choose the type of appointment: Certificados UE (for EU citizens) or Expedición de tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (for non-EU citizens).

• Fill in your personal information.

If you’re not in Spain yet, you can apply for your NIE through a Spanish consulate in your country, though this may take longer.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

Before attending your NIE appointment, make sure you have all the required paperwork ready:

Application Form (EX-18): Complete and print two copies of the NIE application form. This form must be filled out in Spanish. You can find an English version as a reference, but the Spanish version is the only one accepted.

Proof of Purpose: Bring a document that explains why you need a NIE, such as a job contract, property purchase agreement, or acceptance letter from a school.

Passport and Copies: Bring your original passport along with photocopies, as well as passport-sized photos.

Additional Documents for Non-EU Citizens: Bring your visa, landing card, or other proof of legal entry into Spain, along with copies.

Step 3: Pay the NIE Fee

To obtain your NIE number, you need to pay a small fee of €9.84 (as of 2023). Here’s how to do it:

• Fill out form 790 online.

• Print the form and take it to any bank in Spain to pay the fee. Some banks even allow you to pay at an ATM.

Make sure to fill out the form carefully—requirements differ for EU and non-EU citizens, and the boxes you need to tick vary accordingly.

Step 4: Attend Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, bring all the completed forms and documents:

• Completed NIE application form (EX-18).

• Proof of why you need the NIE (e.g., employment contract, acceptance letter).

• Passport and copies.

• Proof of tax payment (form 790 receipt).

• Visa and copies (for non-EU citizens).

At the appointment, officials at the police station or the Oficina de Extranjeros will process your application. Depending on where you apply, your NIE number might be issued immediately, or you may need to return after a few days to collect it.

Tips for a Smooth Process

Expect Delays: Spanish bureaucracy can be unpredictable, and procedures may vary by region. It’s important to stay calm and patient throughout the process.

Bring Extra Copies: Always bring photocopies of all documents, as having more paperwork than necessary is better than missing a required document and having to reschedule your appointment.

Research Local Requirements: Procedures can vary slightly between municipalities, so make sure to check what’s required in your local area.

How Long is a NIE Number Valid?

A NIE number is valid indefinitely. Once you have it, it’s yours for life, whether it’s in the form of a green paper or a plastic card. Be sure to keep it safe and always have photocopies available.
