If you’re an EU citizen, you’ll need to apply for a NIE within three months of arriving in Spain. Non-EU citizens will typically receive their NIE along with their Spanish residency card.

If you’re from the UK, remember that after Brexit, you’ll apply for a different type of card called the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero).

Step 1: Make an Appointment for Your NIE

The first step is to schedule an appointment online. You can do this on the official Spanish government website. It’s best to book your appointment as soon as possible after arriving in Spain, as availability can be limited, and the waiting time may be at least a month.

• Go to the appointment booking website.

• Select your province.

To obtain your NIE number, you need to pay a small fee of €9.84 (as of 2023). Here’s how to do it:

• Fill out form 790 online.

• Print the form and take it to any bank in Spain to pay the fee. Some banks even allow you to pay at an ATM.
