A Celestial Spectacle: Museum of the Moon Illuminates Segovia Cathedral

Museum of the Moon

From February 14 to March 31, 2025, the historic Segovia Cathedral will host an otherworldly art installation: Museum of the Moon, a breathtaking fusion of art, science, and heritage. This extraordinary exhibition, created by British artist Luke Jerram, transforms the cathedral’s trascoro into a celestial theater, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the cathedral’s construction while inviting visitors to contemplate the beauty and mystery of Earth’s closest cosmic companion.

At the heart of the installation is a seven-meter-diameter lunar sculpture, suspended four meters above the cathedral floor. Using detailed NASA imagery of the moon’s surface, Jerram’s work replicates the lunar landscape at a scale of 1:500,000—every centimeter representing five kilometers of the moon’s terrain.

Internally illuminated, the sphere casts an ethereal glow, its craters, ridges, and “seas” rendered in stunning precision. As the sculpture rotates gently, synchronized lighting enhances the illusion of the moon drifting through space, creating a dynamic, almost hypnotic display.

Accompanying the visual spectacle is an immersive soundscape by award-winning composer Dan Jones. Known for his BAFTA and Ivor Novello-winning work, Jones layers ambient melodies, field recordings, and celestial-inspired harmonies to evoke the moon’s haunting allure.

The combination of light, motion, and sound transforms the trascoro into a multisensory experience, bridging the gap between scientific exploration and artistic interpretation.

A Monumental Setting for a Cosmic Encounter

The choice of Segovia Cathedral as the venue adds profound symbolic weight to the exhibition. As the cathedral marks its 500th anniversary, Museum of the Moon underscores humanity’s timeless fascination with the cosmos—a theme mirrored in the cathedral’s own awe-inspiring architecture. The juxtaposition of Jerram’s modern lunar installation against the Gothic splendor of the cathedral creates a dialogue between past and present, earthly and celestial.

“This exhibition is a celebration of both human achievement and natural wonder,” notes a cathedral spokesperson. “Just as the cathedral itself represents the pinnacle of human creativity and devotion, the moon reminds us of our place in the universe—small yet endlessly curious.”
